Drawing comic is hard! XD
Eventhough I used to draw Wuffle Comics back in 2012-2017 (4-panel strips in Year 1 and Year 3, plus a full 15-page stories in Year 2), itโs still really challenging for me to this day. Having to think about panel layout, eye flow, text balloon placement, and composition for every single page is enough to make your head explode lol.
So over the past week, I experimented by drawing the prologue of Robin Boof to figure out which format I like best.
You can read the synopsis of the first part here:๐ The Story of Robin Boof and the Lost Pajamas Pt 1 ๐น
First, I drew it in my usual style: a rough animatic panels. No layout or text balloons, just a continuous of action sequences. It shows Robin easily escaping from three guards, then shooting an arrow at the guardsโs helmets before vanishing into the deep forest.
Next, I asked my BF Ginkgosan to turn it into a proper comic page layout.
Heโs so much better at layout the comic than me! I loved how readable and breathable the panels felt between each action.
The only problem is it ended up being 15 pages long! XD
For a short and fun project, spending 15 pages on just the prologue is way too much.
I do loved the flow tho, so I decided to try another approach:turning it into a Vertical Webtoon format.
You can download the PDF in the attachment below to read it on your phone in tall vertical format!I discovered that I can draw the flow much better in vertical format. It feels almost like making an animatic for animation!
However, it was still too long and tall. It needed to be more compact and easier to digest.
Even though vertical format feels very natural to me, I want Robin Boof to be read like a traditional comic (Iโll save vertical format for Mango and Oat in the future!).
So today I made adjustments. I went for a much simpler layout with as few pages as possible.
And I finally did it!
Just 3 pages total for the prologue, but it still has everything: the heist, the escape, and Robinโs personality shining through!

Hereโs a sample of the page! Please excuse my poor Engrish and very, very rough sketches lol).
Iโm very satisfied with the result!
Itโs short enough to keep the momentum going without losing any important details.
Let me know what you think when you read it XD
WOO! That was a long post. Thanks for reading!
Iโm going to continue drawing the next pages until the first part is complete and show you along the way!
