The bird was in the air. Watching as it rose upwards and seemed to shrink into the sky, Lieutenant Mitchell said a silent prayer from his rooftop vantage point. This needed to work or there was going to be carnage on American soil. She was walking towards them and the chopper was moving painfully slowly towards her, rising towards her face.
She was majestic. Acres of wet skin glistened under the hot sun, her hair hung in damp locks draped over a stern face. Striding forwards she moved like a titanic, graceful, piece of machinery. Buildings and streets crunched beneath her feet, and the earth shook.
The chopper had not yet got as high as her face, but she was already upon it. They couldn’t wait any longer.
“Private Hernandez!” A tinny voice rang out from the loudspeaker. She stopped and looked downwards towards the helicopter, bee sized to her, only at the level of her chest. “You are ordered to halt here and return to Alpha Base by the route you have taken.”
She did not react at first. Mitchell felt a sickening tightening of his gut. As a soldier, if she was going to obey as they had been trained, she would already have stood to attention and turned to return to the base where she had come from, where the accident had happened. But she hadn’t. He tried to look up at her face, far above. It was difficult to see into the glare of the sun but was that a sneer? A downward flex of her mouth? A raised eyebrow? Man she was built.
Slowly she raised a hand until it was level with the chopper. Palm up. Fingers… oh no. A finger cocked. Mitchell’s stomach lurched, he almost cried out, seeing what was about to happen. There was no way they could avoid her. Private Hernandez’s cocked finger shot forwards as she flicked, smashing through the helicopter and turning it into a fireball that flew backwards back over Mitchell’s head like a bullet out of a gun, smashing into a neighbourhood a mile away. Hernandez inspected her finger, wiped it on her leg, and resumed walking towards the capitol.
