Beverly stopped walking. She wiggled her toes, revelling in the sensation of the building crushed to rubble beneath her bare feet. She imagined that this is what it would feel like to walk over a bed of wafers or biscuits, the structures disintegrating under her foot as she stepped down, becoming a crumbly substrate that felt luxurious under her soles. She took a deep drag from her cigarette and cocked her hip, folding her arms across her prodigious chest. Facing her a was building slightly tall than she was. It was an office block, all glass and air, which stood like a full length mirror. She inspected her reflection and brushed some concrete dust from her shoulder and fixed some of her flyaway hairs. She wasn’t bad for her age. She was thicker than she had been when she was younger. More junk in the trunk. Her skin wasn’t great. Too much drink, too many cigs, too many long days working and late night partying. It was catching up to her. But now who cared? She had been elevated. Now she was special. She sniffed and took another drag. She looked at the whole reflection, seeing the city behind her and how most of the buildings were around knee or even ankle high to her. Now she was downtown the taller high rises started to loom over her a bit, but she wasn’t concerned. Now she wouldn’t have to bend down to look inside them.
“Speaking of which…” Beverly mumbled, leaning forwards towards the surface of the office block. She squinted, trying to look beyond the mirrored surface at what lay behind it. There were people there. People staring at her. She let out a snort. “Why ain’t you running?” she mocked. “I’d be running if I was looking at me coming up here.” She squinted again. Some people were backing away, most were still there at their windows, standing transfixed. She wanted to see them better, get behind the glass. Slowly she raised her finger, bringing it up until it was touching the delicate surface. Then slowly she pushed her nail in, instantly shattering the windows on a single floor. Carefully she dragged it across about six inches, revealing the interior. Now she could see the little people, they were running towards the back of the office.
“Hey now little nuggets, where are you going? I want to take a closer look.” With that Beverly pushed her hand in, opening up a larger hole, and gently grabbed whatever she could that wriggled.
