Chapter 1: The Weight of the World
DC Comics Universe - Metropolis
The silence was the hardest part to get used to.
For the first fifteen years of his new life in Metropolis, Naruto Uzumaki kept waiting for the spark. He would sit on the fire escape of his family’s cramped apartment in the Suicide Slum district, close his eyes, and try to press his palms together. He knew the hand signs by heart. Ram, Tiger, Boar, Ox. He remembered the exact mental rhythm required to mold physical and spiritual energy, the precise internal snap that should have flooded his veins with blue, roaring fire.
Nothing ever happened.
There was no chakra in this world. There was no nature energy to draw from the towering concrete monoliths of Tomorrow's City, no Kurama sleeping behind iron bars in the basement of his soul. He was just a kid named Naruto with blonde hair, weird birthmarks on his cheeks that looked like faded whiskers, and a mind full of combat tactics from a lifetime he couldn't prove existed. His parents in this life were regular, hard-working people who died in a crossfire between local gangs when he was twelve, leaving him to navigate the grimy underbelly of Metropolis alone.
Without chakra, he was ordinary. He was a normal human who had to rely on a gym membership, a cheap punching bag, and the sheer muscle memory of a ghost to keep himself alive. He grew up tough, lean, and intensely frustrated. The world around him was filled with gods, men who flew through the sky in blue capes, green lights that policed the stars, and billionaire geniuses who built suits of armor. Yet he was stuck on the pavement, working a late-night security shift at a LexCorp testing facility just to pay for rent and instant ramen.
Until the night the sky broke inside Lab 4.
"Uzumaki, check the pressure seals on the sub-basement three vector chambers," a voice crackled through his cheap plastic earpiece. It was Dr. Wilcox, one of Lex Luthor’s lead researchers on the "Quantum Slipstream" project.
Naruto adjusted the heavy tactical belt around his waist and sighed, his heavy boots echoing against the pristine, polished white floors of the subterranean complex. "On it, Doc. But I'm telling you, that hum coming from the main core doesn't sound right. It’s got that high-pitched whine like an engine about to throw a rod."
"Just read the gauges, Uzumaki. Leave the physics to the people with degrees."
Naruto rolled his eyes, walking past the thick, reinforced plexiglass windows of the central chamber. Inside, a massive, ring-shaped particle accelerator was spinning a localized cluster of dark matter. LexCorp was trying to harvest clean, infinite energy by ripping open tiny, controlled tears in the fabric of space-time. To Naruto, it just looked like an invitation for a massive explosion. His instincts, the old, deeply buried shinobi senses that survived a dozens of battlefields, were screaming at him to run.
He reached the control console near the primary containment cell. The digital needles were vibrating violently into the red.
"Uh, Wilcox? The gauges say your infinite energy machine is currently having a panic attack," Naruto said, stepping back as the air in the room suddenly grew freezing cold. The hair on his arms stood on end.
"What? That’s impossible, the dampeners are..."
The earpiece cut out into static.
A sound like tearing metal echoed through the sub-basement. It wasn't loud; it was a deep, low frequency that vibrated right through Naruto’s teeth. In the center of the ring, the dark matter didn't explode outward. It imploded. A pitch-black dot, no larger than a marble, hung in the center of the air.
Then, the gravity in the room went completely insane.
Naruto’s feet left the floor as the alarm klaxons finally began to wail, their red lights flashing uselessly against the white walls. The metal clipboards, heavy steel tools, and even the massive iron consoles were ripped from their bolts, pulled violently toward the tiny black sphere.
"Son of a..." Naruto gasped, his fingers clawing at a structural pillar as his body was hoisted horizontally into the air. The pull was immense. It felt like an invisible hand was wrapping around his ribcage, squeezing the breath right out of his lungs.
Through the glass, he saw Wilcox and two other scientists pinned against the viewing window, their faces pale with terror as the structural integrity of the lab began to disintegrate. The plexiglass cracked with a sound like a gunshot. The vacuum of the micro-singularity was about to swallow them whole.
Naruto didn't think. His body moved before his mind could formulate a plan, the classic, dangerous trait that had defined his entire youth. He let go of the pillar.
Instead of flying backward into the void, he used the tumbling debris as stepping stones. He kicked off a floating metal desk, twisting his body through the air with the jagged agility of a ninja, grabbing Wilcox by the collar of his lab coat just as the glass shattered completely. With his other hand, he hooked his tactical belt around a heavy, reinforced structural beam near the emergency exit door.
"Hold on!" Naruto roared over the deafening screech of ripping steel.
The micro-singularity flared, turning a violent, brilliant shade of violet before collapsing in on itself. The localized gravitational pull tripled in a millisecond. The structural beam Naruto was holding onto snapped like a toothpick.
The world went black, but not before Naruto felt a sensation he hadn't felt in fifteen years. A sudden, violent rush of heat flooded his entire body, starting from his navel and tearing through every single nerve ending. It wasn't the warm, fluid rush of chakra. It was heavy. It felt like liquid lead was being pumped directly into his veins, crushing his bones from the inside out until he couldn't even scream.
Three weeks later, Naruto sat on the edge of his bed, staring at his hands.
The doctors at the Metropolis General Hospital had called his survival a miraculous anomaly. LexCorp had paid off his medical bills instantly, offering a hefty non-disclosure settlement that Naruto had signed without a second thought. He didn't care about Luthor’s money; he cared about what the accident had done to him.
He wasn't ordinary anymore.
Naruto reached out, targeting a cheap plastic alarm clock sitting on his nightstand. He didn't mold energy. He didn't focus on a point within his body. Instead, he just felt the space around the clock. He imagined making the air around it heavier, denser.
With a soft thud, the alarm clock suddenly smashed flat into the wood of the nightstand, the plastic casing cracking under an invisible, immense pressure.
"Whoa," Naruto muttered, a small, dangerous smirk tugging at the corner of his lips. He flicked his wrist upward, reversing the thought. The crushed remnants of the clock lifted into the air, floating weightlessly before him. He could feel the exact center of its mass, the tiny gravitational threads connecting it to the earth, and he could pull on those threads like a puppeteer.
The ninja arts were gone forever. He couldn't make clones, he couldn't throw fire, and he couldn't summon giant frogs. But what he had now was pure, raw authority over physical space.
He didn't have to wait long to use it.
A loud explosion rocked the street below his apartment, shattering his glass window and showering the linoleum floor with shards. Sirens began to wail in the distance, a sound so common in Metropolis it was practically background noise, but this was followed by something else, the heavy, rhythmic thud of plasma fire and the terrified screams of hundreds of civilians.
Naruto walked to the broken window and looked down.
The sky above the financial district was choked with thick, black smoke. Three massive, heavily armored transport dropships, angular and alien in design, were hovering over the rooftops. They didn't belong to LexCorp, and they certainly didn't belong to the military. Mechanical, insectoid soldiers dressed in dark chrome armor were spilling out of the crafts, firing crimson energy beams into the crowds below, ruthlessly cutting down anything that moved.
"Scavengers," Naruto muttered, his eyes narrowing as he recognized the chaotic, destructive pattern of an alien raid. With the Justice League dealing with an off-world crisis in the Vega system, Metropolis was vulnerable, and every interstellar pirate with a warp drive knew it.
Naruto grabbed a dark, hooded jacket from his closet, pulling it over his orange t-shirt. He didn't have a costume. He didn't need one. He just needed to stop those things from tearing his neighborhood apart.
He stepped out onto the fire escape, looked down at the street three stories below, and jumped.
Anyone else would have broken their legs. Naruto simply willed the earth to stop pulling him so hard. Ten feet above the pavement, his descent slowed to a gentle drift, his boots touching the concrete with a faint tap.
A dozen alien soldiers were marching down the avenue, their plasma rifles raised, cornering a group of terrified office workers against a stalled bus. The leader of the squad, a towering cyborg with a jagged blade attached to its forearm, raised its weapon to fire.
"Hey! Chrome-face!" Naruto shouted, his voice echoing over the chaos.
The alien squad turned in unison, their red, robotic visors locking onto the lone human standing in the middle of the street with his hands in his pockets. The leader let out a harsh, clicking laugh through its vocal synthesizer and raised its plasma rifle, aiming directly at Naruto’s chest.
"Fire," the alien commanded in a guttural language.
A searing bolt of red plasma erupted from the barrel, traveling at blinding speed.
Naruto didn't flinch. He didn't even move his hands out of his pockets. He just focused his mind, throwing up a localized wall of hyper-dense gravity two feet in front of his face.
The plasma bolt hit the invisible barrier and stopped dead. The immense gravitational field warped the space around the energy, bending the light and heat, trapping the bolt in a spinning, compressed orbit until it simply imploded into a harmless puff of ozone.
The alien soldiers froze, their mechanical processors trying to comprehend what had just happened.
"My turn," Naruto said, his eyes flashing with a sharp, feral light.
He took a step forward, and the ground beneath his boot cracked. With a sudden burst of speed, he altered his own personal gravity, reducing his weight to practically nothing while increasing his forward momentum. He crossed the fifty-foot gap in a fraction of a second, appearing directly in front of the alien leader.
He dropped his hand out of his pocket, clenched his fist, and restored his weight—multiplying the mass of his fist by a factor of fifty just as it connected with the cyborg's jaw.
BOOM.
The impact sounded like a wrecking ball hitting a brick wall. The massive alien soldier was launched backward, crashing through the side of the stalled bus, bending the thick steel frame before spinning across the asphalt for another fifty yards.
The remaining eleven soldiers immediately opened fire, a barrage of plasma bolts lighting up the dim street.
Naruto danced through the storm. He didn't have the precognition of the Sharingan anymore, but his battle instincts were flawless. He adjusted his personal gravity on the fly, becoming light as a feather to dodge a blast, then heavy as iron to anchor himself against an explosion. He swung his arm in a wide arc, creating a crushing wave of localized pressure that swept across the pavement like an invisible broom.
Five soldiers were caught in the wave. The immense force slammed them into the concrete, their thick armor cracking and buckling under the sudden weight of ten atmospheres. They couldn't even lift their heads as the ground beneath them sank by three inches.
"Keep 'em coming," Naruto growled, a thrill of adrenaline racing through his veins. It had been so long since he felt this alive, so long since he could let loose without worrying about breaking the fragile world around him.
He leaped into the air, flying straight toward one of the hovering dropships. An alien gunner on the ship's deck tried to aim a heavy turret at him, but Naruto simply extended his hand, twisting his fingers in a tight spiral.
"Compacter," he muttered.
The entire front section of the alien dropship, the heavy armor plating, the weapons systems, the cockpit, suddenly twisted and crumpled inward, as if a giant, invisible fist had squeezed it into a tight ball of scrap metal. The engines sputtered and died, and the massive craft began to plummet toward the crowded square below.
Naruto caught the falling, multi-ton ship with his mind, his teeth grinding against the strain as he halted its descent just ten feet above the ground. With a grunt, he hurled the crumpled transport vessel down the street, slamming it directly into the second dropship with a deafening crash of tearing metal and exploding fuel cells.
Fire and smoke billowed into the sky, illuminating the destruction. Naruto floated a few feet above the asphalt, his hooded jacket flapping in the hot wind, his breathing steady.
"Not bad for a guy without chakra," he murmured to himself, wiping a speck of dust from his shoulder.
"Hey! Hoodie!" a loud, booming voice called out from above.
Naruto tilted his head up, squinting through the smoke.
Descending through the haze was a figure that immediately caught his attention. She wasn't one of the alien invaders. She was a stunning, imposing woman with short, pristine blonde hair, striking blue eyes, and a physique that practically radiated power. She wore a white, form-fitting leotard with a distinctive window opening at the chest, a deep red cape billowing behind her, and thick gold gauntlets on her wrists.
Power Girl.
Naruto had seen her on the news before, usually flying alongside the Justice Society or handling global threats, but seeing her in person was a completely different story. She was breathtaking, but more importantly, she looked like she could punch a moon out of orbit.
Karen landed with a heavy thud, her boots fracturing the concrete as she surveyed the absolute carnage Naruto had left behind. She looked at the two crushed dropships, the alien soldiers pinned to the ground by invisible weight, and then turned her gaze to Naruto, her eyebrows raised in genuine surprise.
"Did you do all this?" she asked, hands resting on her hips, her tone a mix of disbelief and dark amusement. "I flew all the way from the corporate district because the scanners picked up an alien vanguard, and I find some kid in a torn jacket has already turned them into tin cans."
"They were making too much noise outside my apartment," Naruto replied smoothly, his hands sliding back into his pockets as he drifted down until his boots touched the ground. He gave her a slow, appreciative look, his gaze lingering on her strong, athletic frame before meeting her eyes with a confident grin. "Besides, I don't see your name on the street sign, sweetheart. First come, first served."
Karen blinked, a sharp, competitive laugh escaping her lips. Most people, even other heroes, tended to stammer or act intimidated around her. This guy was looking at her like she was just another girl at a bar, despite the fact that she could lift a cruise ship.
"Sweetheart?" Karen repeated, stepping closer, her massive chest rising and falling as she looked down at him slightly. She was tall, built like a goddess, and used to dominating any room she walked into. "You've got a lot of nerve for a guy who doesn't even have a proper cape. What's your deal? I don't see any cybernetics, and you don't smell like an alien."
"Just a guy who hates property damage," Naruto said, his voice dropping into a grittier, seasoned tone. His eyes, sharp and calculating, scanned her posture. He could see the subtle shift in her weight, the raw, coiled power in her muscles. She wasn't just strong; she was a brawler. A frontline warrior, just like him. "And I don't need tech to handle garbage like this."
Karen’s eyes narrowed, a dangerous, playful spark igniting in her blue depths. The sheer physical friction between them was almost palpable, an immediate spark of competitive energy. She liked his attitude. It was gritty, raw, and completely devoid of the usual Boy Scout routine she had to deal with in the hero community.
"Oh yeah?" Karen murmured, taking another step forward, bringing her face inches from his. The scent of ozone and something sweet drifted off her. "You think you're tough because you can smash a few scout ships? Those things are fragile. How about you try throwing that weight around against someone who can actually take a hit?"
Naruto’s grin widened, his old battle-hungry spirit roaring to life. "Are you challenging me to a fight, Power Girl?"
"A spar," Karen corrected, a beautiful, fierce smile breaking across her face. "Tomorrow morning. LexCorp stadium, the abandoned one in the industrial park. Just you and me. Let's see what you're really made of, hoodie."
Before Naruto could answer, she launched herself into the sky with a sonic boom, leaving a ring of vaporized smoke behind her.
Naruto watched her disappear into the clouds, the heavy, electric anticipation settling deep in his chest. His blood was pumping hard, the physical tension from their brief encounter lingering in the air.
"Power Girl," Naruto muttered, a feral smile stretching across his face as he turned back toward his apartment. "Yeah. Tomorrow is going to be fun."
