The Thing doesn’t just make its characters paranoid, it builds a whole cinematic language that makes you paranoid too. In this episode I break down how Carpenter and Dean Cundy train the audience to read certain visual cues as “truth,” then start using those same cues to lie, especially in the 20-minute stretch where MacReady is framed as possibly being the Thing. We’ll look at the open-door/negative-space trick, the Fuchs scene, the blue runway lights vs magenta flares, the gray production design, and how all of it primes you for the blood test payoff.
