Ethan set his coffee mug down on the low, mahogany coffee table with a slow, deliberate click. He didn't stand up. He just leaned back further into the plush leather sofa, draping his arms along the backrest, and offered Natasha a lazy, knowing smirk.
"You move fast, Agent Romanoff," Ethan drawled, his golden eyes doing a slow, unbothered scan of her figure. "I figured Fury would make you wait at least twenty-four hours to make the 'I'm a rogue agent' act look believable. He’s getting sloppy in his old age."
Natasha didn't blink. She stepped over the threshold, closing the heavy oak doors behind her with a soft thud that echoed in the cavernous foyer. She looked entirely unbothered by the fact that her cover was nonexistent before she had even walked in.
"Fury suggested I take the job," Natasha admitted, walking into the foyer with the fluid, predatory grace of a big cat. She didn't look at the priceless, dangerous relics lining the walls; her green eyes were fixed solely on the biggest threat in the room—him. "He prefers I keep my targets close. And since you seem to know everything about S.H.I.E.L.D. anyway, he figured a frontal approach was best."
"Smart man," Ethan chuckled. He gesture vaguely to the empty space in front of him. "Have a seat. Let's talk about your resume."
Natasha didn't sit. She stopped a few feet from the sofa, crossing her arms. "I speak eleven languages. I can infiltrate any secure facility on the planet, pilot anything with wings or wheels, and kill a man in forty different ways using only a paperclip. What’s the job description?"
Ding!
A silent, blue notification pinged in the corner of Ethan's vision.
[ Side Quest Triggered: Housekeeping ]
Objective: Hire Natalia Alianovna Romanova as staff for the New York Sanctum.
Reward: 1,000 System Points
Ethan’s smirk widened. The System really did have a sense of humor. 1,000 points just for hiring the Black Widow? Deal.
"Impressive," Ethan nodded, looking at her, matching her intensity. "But we don't really do paperclips here, Natalie. Let me show you what the actual workload looks like."
He raised a hand and snapped his fingers with a sharp crack.
The warm, mahogany foyer vanished instantly. The smell of old wood and incense was replaced by a sterile, freezing, airless void. Suddenly, they were standing in the heart of the Mirror Dimension, surrounded by infinite, fractal reflections of the New York skyline, shifting and folding over themselves like a kaleidoscopic nightmare.
Natasha reacted like a seasoned operative. She dropped instantly into a low, defensive stance. Her hand flew to the small of her back where a Glock 26 was holstered, her green eyes darting around the impossible reality. She didn't panic, she was too professional for that, but her heart rate—which Ethan could hear with a clarity that was almost deafening—spiked dangerously.
"Relax, Agent," Ethan's voice echoed, not from his mouth, but from everywhere at once, bouncing off the glass facets of the twisted city. He was standing ten feet away from her, looking completely relaxed, his hands casually tucked into his pockets. "Just showing you the office layout."
Natasha didn't uncoil. She looked up at the sky, which was currently a fractured mosaic of Times Square. "What is this? Holograms?"
"This is called the Mirror Dimension," Ethan explained, walking forward, his boots clicking on a pane of 'glass' that reflected the Statue of Liberty. "It’s a localized dimension that exists in parallel to our own. It’s always there, but completely unseen by the ordinary eye."
Ethan waved his hand, causing a nearby building to fold into a series of jagged, rotating triangular facets.
"Cameras can’t see in here. Satellites can’t map it. It’s the ultimate black site. The reason the world knows nothing about us Sorcerers, even in an age where everyone carries a camera, is because of this place. All the messy, destructive battles? They happen in here. We protect the real world by bleeding in this one."
Natasha slowly straightened up, her eyes wide with a rare, genuine amazement. "Can... all of you do this?"
"The Mirror Dimension is one of the fundamental concepts taught at Kamar-Taj," Ethan shrugged. "You can’t defend the world from dimensional entities if you don't know how to move between them. Secrecy is the ultimate shield."
Ethan snapped his fingers again. The kaleidoscopic world collapsed inward, and the warm, mahogany foyer of the Sanctum returned with a comforting rush of gravity.
He didn't stop there. He snapped his fingers a second time.
Instantly, they appeared in a cold, subterranean room. The air was heavy with the smell of ozone and formaldehyde. The walls were lined with shelves holding what looked like thousands of glass bottles and containment jars of varying sizes.
Inside the jars, things moved.
In one, a cloud of sentient black smoke thrashed violently. In another, a grotesque, many-eyed creature with tendrils the size of his forearm clawed at the glass. In a particularly large jar, a miniature humanoid figure with translucent skin and razor-sharp teeth stared at Natasha with chilling malice.
"You see these?" Ethan gestured to the rows of horrors. "These are demons, spirits, and entities from other dimensions that managed to slip into our reality. Some were summoned by ambitious, stupid humans. Some found their way through cracks. Our primary job is to hunt them down, catch them, and send them back to where they came from. And if we can't send them back? We confine them here until we find a way."
He gave her a brief, silent tour of the Sanctum's containment wings, explaining the role of a Sorcerer. By the end of the half-hour tour, as they returned to the main foyer, Romanoff’s composure was shattered.
Her usual icy, observant mask had melted into a look of profound shock.
She was the Black Widow. She had fought super-soldiers, assassins, and warlords. She thought she had seen the deepest, darkest horrors humanity had to offer. But now? She realized she was just a normal human agent armed with some guns and martial arts skills, standing in the middle of a war she hadn't even known existed.
Ethan looked at her shocked face and let out a short, bark of laughter. "What... got scared, Agent?"
"Any sane person would be," Natasha admitted, her voice unusually quiet. She looked around the foyer, the antiques now seeming infinitely more dangerous. "Half an hour ago, I didn't even know the world was this vast. The more I know, the more... insignificant I feel."
"That’s why the saying exists: Ignorance is bliss," Ethan nodded, his golden eyes growing serious. "Until you know about it, the world seems simple and fine. But once you peek into the secrets, Natalie... there is no going back."
Natasha took a deep breath, her spy mind fighting to regain control of the situation. "Alright. I understand the scope of the threat now. So... what will be my job description? Training? Strategy? Containment assistance?"
A truly evil smirk spread across Ethan's face. He reached into his dimensional pocket and pulled out a small, ornately wrapped box, pushing it towards her across the top of the sofa.
"I need your signature."
Natasha looked at him suspiciously, then took the box. She unwrapped it and opened the lid. Her expression went completely blank.
Inside, sitting neatly folded, was a classic, black-and-white maid outfit, complete with a ruffled apron and a lace headpiece.
She slowly looked up at him, her green eyes narrowing into dangerous slits, expecting the punchline to a very bad, very sexist joke.
"You will be my maid, Natalie," Ethan stated smoothly, leaning forward and winking at her. "The Sanctum is dusty, and I hate doing laundry. When do you start?"
