(SB is the abbrevation of the title of my new game; which will be a secret for now.)
How are you guys doing? Got a nice New Years Eve? Already back into the work force? Me, too!
I'm going to start this new patreon post series whenever I will talk about the development of my new game, which will be a lot.
Cool, so what did I do in SB?In the past I talked about re-designing the character (mostly her clothes). This has been done. I drew her new clothing into pixelart and replaced the old clothes in her animations. The neat thing is that I can keep the old clothes, cause, as I said in the past, clothes will play a big(ger) role in the game. So I can use the old clothes for some optional outfits. There was a bit of an issue with the new ones: A part of her new outfit is a pretty small cape. I had trouble building it layer by layer. Since the Main Character (MC) can rotate her arms, it looked awkward when she is pointing her arm towards the sky and clipped out of that cape. I only got a partially working solution by moving the cape around via code, whenever she reaches a certain spot in the arm rotation.
But why does she need to be able to do that, you ask? Simple: In the past I also mentioned that the MC will be a spell-slinging sorceress. Her spells will be skill shots and the arm is following the mouse cursor. This will be the main part of how to do combat: Different spells vs. different enemies.
In the past I also mentioned that I wanted to work on the background and level design of the game, but this got delayed, since I catched myself working on some polishing and quality of live things for the spellcasting already. But this is fine; I'd have done that anyway at some point. You wanna have an example? Okay, how about this: Using magic drains mana. You can hold the mouse button to charge a spell. And now there is an additional bar in the manabar that shows the mana consumption of your current charged spell!Small, but useful stuff like that.
Next up:I need to implement a new spell to set up some code for the future. For example, switching around different spells in hotbars. Implementing more spells will be easier this way in the future. I'm not doing a skilltree (yet), cause for now I really just need the basic implementation.
The first spell that the player will see is a fireball. Next I wanna create a lightning bolt.Spells in the game will be classic ones, like in early RPG's, D&D, etc.
After that I wanna work on the platforms, background art and level design; as I have planned before.
Alright, this is all for now. I will make another post after I started on the level design and background art.
Btw., please forgive me for not sharing screenshots, yet. I will do so way later in development.
I hope posts like this are interesting to read for you. This is the first time I do devlogs like that. Feel free to leave a comment.
I wish you a nice day!
