When Danny Fenton was 5 years old his parents Maddie and Jack Fenton decided to get him a pet, something small and simple and nothing overly complex. So no cats, dogs, ferrets, hamsters, or birds. They did this with their daughter Jasmine and she got a fish.
The initial thought was gonna be another fish. Danny looked at other reptiles, a lizard or maybe a turtle. His focus landed on a strange small snake, it had a blue head with red markings, its scales were a mix of red and blue. Maddie was a bit concerned since colorful snakes tended to be poisonous.
“You don’t have to worry about this one. This snake has no venom.” The salesperson said. “It’s a rare breed of snake, very smart, perfect for pets.”
Danny stared at it and their eyes met. “This one, he’s perfect!”
“What are you gonna name him? Little Jack, Jackie, Mini Jack, Lorenzo…”
“Lorenzo?” Maddie asked.
“What he looks like a Lorenzo.” Maddie nudged her husband.
Danny looked at the snake. “His name is Azaspa!” A weird name but Danny wasn’t budging on it, saying it was his name he just knew it.
The snake became a Fenton and Danny’s first pet. It was indeed smart, and almost as loyal as a dog. Danny could pick him up and the snake would slither between his fingers, and even coil around his wrist. He was given snake pellets, a more humane way to feed snakes as they provided all the nutrition, fat, and vitamins a healthy snake needed to grow and be healthy.
Danny loved having a pet snake, he talked to him all the time. He talked about his two friends Tucker and Dash. With Tucker he liked to nerd out about stuff, like comic books, video games, and sci-fi movies. With Dash it was different, Dash was the big kid on the playground and no one messed with him. He took charge and arranged games of tag and hide and seek, a natural leader.
They were more active. Danny told Azaspa, they went skateboarding, rollerblading, played at the park. They even went to the arcade where Danny won Baxter a stuffed teddy bear. It was pink and Dash said he loved it. As they got older Dash got into more sports, they saw each other less and less as his dad pushed Dash to go to Football Camp, Basketball Camp, Baseball Camp. It helped him bulk up and he met more jock friends.
Fenton didn’t let it get to him because he was a naive kid, under guise of friends forever.
Danny made a new friend Sam Manson, she wasn’t like other girls, she was more into dark magic and occult stuff. Sam actually thought Danny having a pet snake was cool and interesting.
He shared everything with Azaspa, he saw the little guy as a dear friend. Danny took very good care of him, and Azaspa was always there to listen.
At Age 10 Danny’s world was shifting, Dash was pulling away, prioritizing his new sporty friends over him. Fenton didn’t know it but Dash’s father really put the ideas in his head. Mr. Baxter thought Danny’s family was weird and creepy, and that Danny wasn’t the type of boy Dash should associate with.
The Fentons studied ghosts, believing there was a Ghost Zone. Maddie paid the bills using her brilliance to make all kinds of gadgets which were patented and sold letting the Fentons live comfortably. Most of their money went into their research on Ghosts.
When Dash wanted to hang out with Danny, his father would surprise him with something or an event, to distract him, even birthday parties. Danny’s invite would go missing and never get mailed out. When invited to Danny’s birthday parties, Mr. Baxter would bring up another event they couldn’t pass up. Dash felt bad at first, but his old man just pressed people grow apart that was life. He said to prioritize those that showed up.
His mother was unaware of what was happening except when Danny brought Dash a gift, and the father tried to dispose of it before Dash saw it. She told him to knock off whatever he was doing, but Mr. Baxter played dumb. The damage was done though. Dash’s head was filled with ideas and Danny slipped further from his mind. Though he did visit their old arcade and win a similar plush bear. He kept them in his closet, hidden from his father.
Danny had tried to get more into sports to try and keep a connection with Dash. Jack was all for it, talking about the old days and playing College Football. He tried to get Danny into a football camp, but the slots were full. So instead he signed Danny up for an Ice Hockey Camp. It was sports, so Danny hoped it’d be something.
Camp was nice, he learned how to skate, learned about Ice Hockey, even met some cool dudes Wayne and Raj. They bonded and even became pen pals. Danny showed Azaspa the letters he got from them, and the snake sat on his shoulder when he wrote to them.
When Danny tried to tell Dash about camp, the blonde had initially been interested, but when he told his dad about it. His dad started bad mouthing Hockey Players, that it wasn’t a “real” sport. His wife tried to shut it down and Mr. Baxter backpedaled saying it didn’t hold as much importance in school. Casper High had Football Teams, Basketball Teams, Soccer Teams, Tennis Teams, even Soccer and Track Teams, but no teams for Ice Hockey.
Dash respected his father, so he took stock in the things he said. He quickly dismissed Danny’s athletic efforts. “You should try becoming a real athlete.”
His mother was livid. Hockey players had a very demanding activity, and to hear her husband talk like that when he was such a sports buff was disgusting. Again he switched tactics, talking to his son about the importance of high school, making all the right friends, how High School was the best years of your life, and it was all downhill from there.
It didn’t add up, she knew he had watched Ice Hockey, rooted for different teams like any other sports team he favored, but because Danny was involved suddenly it wasn’t a real sport. Checking their cable package she deactivated their ice hockey subscription when the dad noticed he was annoyed. “Why, I thought it wasn’t a real sport?” If he wanted his precious sports package back he had to apologize to Dash. He didn’t. She laid it out clearly, in her game he had two strikes, one more strike and he was out of the house.
Mr. Baxter liked to play big man on campus, but frankly he peaked in high school. Mrs. Baxter didn’t think so, she thought he was a good man and a decent provider, but sometimes the things he said and the things he believed in were so shallow and juvenile it didn’t feel like the man who took her up to make out point, it didn’t feel like the boy who brought her flowers and took her to the senior dance. It was like he was so desperate reliving his glory days through his son and it was bringing out the worst in him.
He wasn’t there for the playdates. She saw how Dash and Danny played together, they were happy. As for the parents, Jack was...unique...but she got along with Maddie just fine. Jasmine was a bit mature for her age, but still a smart and strong young lady. While she knew not all friendships lasted forever she didn’t like her husband sabotaging a relationship just because he thought Danny’s parents were weird. He also decided this without talking to her. Mr. Baxter was very much on thin ice or in the dog house, but he let his groundwork carry on.
What he didn’t get is Dash was a good boy, the early birthdays he actually did look for Danny and was sad when the boy didn’t show up. It hurt him! Mrs Baxter had made excuses but now looking back she realized her husband caused it. She tried to intervene but Dash was listening to his father.
Danny did have his own life and his own friends, he got to hang out with Sam and Tucker, he kept in touch with his camp friends. He still lamented to Azaspa, he thought Dash was being weird friendly one minute a jerk the next. Azaspa nuzzled him, as if saying he was still here for him.
The years passed and Danny and Dash grew further apart. Fenton’s interests continued to grow, he tried to start a roller hockey team but couldn’t get enough interest. He kept up his skating skills at the roller rink, he gamed online, did movie nights with friends and ended up getting Sam and Tucker to meet, starting a unique trio of friends.
Danny had dreams of being an astronaut, he worked hard on keeping up an athletic body and keeping his grades up so he could be one someday. He even did drawings of him and Azaspa on a rocket or being on the moon from when he was a kid. They’d look up at the stars together, Azaspa curled up on his chest.
Then came one day, Azaspa had been his pet for 10 years. Danny woke up and said Good Morning. The snake wasn’t moving. “Azaspa?” His eyes widened.
Azaspa lived a long life, typically his species only lived for 7 years, because of the good care and love Danny gave he survived four more years. Fenton cried. His dear friend was gone.
A funeral was held, an actual funeral. Danny invited anyone who knew Azaspa, even sending one to Dash. “Oh shit…” Dash read the letter.
“Dashy language!” His mother chided.
“Sorry Ma, it’s um Danny, his pet snake died.”
“Oh no!” His mother gasped. His father huffed.
“He’s having a funeral for him this Sunday.”
“You should go.” His mother said.
“What?” Mr. Baxter stood up. “A funeral for that disgusting creature, no way!” He snatched the letter. “I knew that family was weird.”
“Ronald Baxter!” She snapped.
“Come on, it is weird, who holds a funeral for a snake. If Dash goes, people are going to think he’s weird to.”
“He’s right Ma, that...is a little weird...I got stuff to do on Sunday anyway.”
“Dashy…” He went upstairs.
Ronald smirked feeling triumphant. Smack! “What’d I do!?” Mrs Baxter knocked the smirk right off him.
“How dare you, that was his pet, his friend, he’s had that snake for years.”
“So...so what?!”
“Remember when your dog died when you were in college. You were a mess, you only had that dog for three years and you were gone from it for two. That dog was still family and I know for damn sure your parents taught you to honor family.”
“That wasn’t family that was a snake…”
“That was a pet, and that boy is hurting, he could have used a friend to help him through a tough time. Just as I was there for you.”
“That...that’s different…” He shook his head. “They aren’t even friends anymore.”
“Like that was some accident.”
“What are you saying?”
“I know what you did. I warned you. You aren’t the man I married...or maybe you are...but I don’t love...this…”
“Are...are you divorcing me?”
“No, we are gonna stay together for Dash’s sake, he deserves to have a mother and a father who love him. I want to believe you’ve done this out of love however misguided. You’ll be sleeping in the guest room, but once he graduates you are out of here.”
“You can’t do that!”
“I can. This house is in my name, it always has been and should we separate it is solely my property. I suggest you stop meddling in your son’s relationships and focus on saving your own. As it stands now, we will be officially separated.” He had four years to earn his wife’s love back or he’d be out on the street.
Dash didn’t go to the funeral. This was the final turning point between Dash and Danny, the childhood friendship died. Danny was a mess for months.
A year after Azaspa’s death came the Ghost Portal experiment. Danny took a look inside it, a great big flash occurred and Danny got flooded with raw ecto energy. His life flashed before his eyes.
Time slowed down and the spirit of a familiar pet/friend appeared before Danny. “Azaspa...is that you?” The snake nodded. He hugged the spirit.
Azaspa had a gift for him. Danny had crossed the valley of life and death, he’d become a halfa, half human...half ghost...this would be a lot for anyone but Danny wasn’t gonna be alone. He was sorry he had to leave him, he so wanted to be with him and see the stars but now they could.
The ghost snake passed into Danny, and helped regulate the energy properly. Danny’s DNA got rearranged, with Azaspa applying energy to help Danny. He got taller, his muscles got more stimulus and helped become flexible and strong like a snakes.
Danny wasn’t like other guys, with his new power he worked on building a better life for himself, stopping the ghosts that were coming through and causing trouble.
