Chapter 30 Here Comes the Squirtle Squad

Ash, Toren, Brock, and Mist are continuing along Route 6, before they could get too far they re suddenly jumped by a small gang of Squirtle wearing shades. “Squirtle!” Mist squealed in delight.

“They are Squirtle!” Ash exclaimed happily. He had wanted all the Kanto Starters, but Squirtle had been his top choice.

The boy checked the Pokedex.

Dexter: Squirtle the Tiny Turtle Pokemon, a Water Type. Shoots water at prey while in the water. Withdraws into its shell when in danger. Squirtles shell is not merely used for protection, the shell’s rounded shape and the grooves on its surface help minimize resistance in water, enabling this Pokemon to swim at high speeds.

Maybe Mist was feeling upset/frustrated about missing out on Abra, or jealous Brock had caught a lovely Vulpix, but the orange haired boy was gung-ho about catching one of these Squirtle. There were six Squirtle in all, though one of them had sharper shades. “I’m gonna catch one!”

He called out Oddish. “Use Absorb!” Oddish did, striking Squirtle with a red energy beam, before it turned green and the energy was absorbed back to Oddish. It was super effective.

“Squirt!” The other Squirtle began attacking firing off Water Guns.

Ash put up an aura field blocking the attacks. The leader eyed him in surprise. Pikachu didn’t take kindly to the attacks and unleashed a Thundershock. It went right for the leader but another Squirtle jumped in front and took the hit.

Mist was focused on catching Squirtle, so even when it fired a Water Gun Oddish took the hit. “Now use Sleep Powder!”

“Ish!” Oddish unleashed the dust and Squirtle fell asleep.

“Monster Ball go!” Mist threw the ball and it hit and sucked the Squirtle up. Jiggle...Jiggle...Jiggle...Ping!

The boss Squirtle freaked out and called for a retreat. They ran off, collecting the injured and fled. “What’s up with them?”

Mist was swooning. “I caught a Squirtle, Squirtle, Squirtle, a Squirtle of my own!” He rubbed his cheek against the ball.

“Hey Mist, can we talk to your Squirtle?”

“Oh...um sure…” Mist called out Squirtle.

The mon huffed, shuffling a bit. He seemed on edge. “Squirtle?”

He huffed again. Ash crouched down to his level. “Hey Squirtle, let’s talk okay, what happened to you and the Squirtle squad?” His aura flared.

Squirtle flinched. He looked between Ash and Mist. Pikachu came forward, the Squirtle flinched and backed away. Ketchum called out his Poliwhirl who helped vouch for Ash. The water type came forward Ash’s hand coming to rest on his head.

“Is this really gonna work?” Mist asked.

Toren nodded.

The Squirtle Squad are a team. We had all been abandoned by our trainers, met up and formed a gang. We swore to get payback on any humans that crossed our paths.” His own trainer was a piece of work, he had taken him to battle Lt. Surge, made him battle Electric Types six times and getting fried each time. After the sixth loss he was deemed useless and tossed out. It gave the little guy a bit of a phobia with Electric types.

“Oh that’s awful, poor Squirt!” Mist hugged him.

“If a trainer puts in the work any Pokemon can be great.” Brock said.

“Yeah!” Mist said. “Squirtle can learn Ground type moves like Dig and Mud Shot, if you learned those you could have a chance against most Electric types.” The mon was given a nickname, it was simple but a name helped forge a stronger bond with a Pokemon. He leaned in close. “I know what it’s like to be scared of a specific type, but you can be brave, I’ll help you get strong, will you trust me?”

Squirt looked at him. He’d give this human a chance, just one chance. With a happy “Squirt!” he jumped into Mist’s arms and got a hug from the orangette.

Mist kept Squirt out to hang out and get used to them. Ash is still thinking about the other Squirtle, he couldn’t help but feel bad for them. Bulbasaur and Charmander had been abandoned by trainers. They went to a nearby town and coming in with a Squirtle brought immediate animosity.

The Squirtle Squad had been tormenting the locals, making them on edge. Squirt hid behind Mist. “Hold it!” He defended his mon.

Weapons turned on them. Pikachu was quick to protect his trainer but Ash stopped him.

Officer Jenny arrived to break things up. “Sorry about them, things have been tense.” Squirt could see the anger.

“It’s the cycle of hatred. The Squirtle Squad were mistreated and abandoned by their trainers, they lash out at humans, and those humans come to hate the Squirtle maybe even all Pokemon.” Toren said. The cycle could go round and round causing more problems.

Ash’s hands balled into fists.

“It’s really sad, if they had trainers who cared about them, they wouldn’t end up as bad as they are.” She said, and noticed Squirt. “You actually caught one of the Squirtle Squad?” Jenny asked. Mist nodded. “That’s not good, they’ll likely come back for payback for messing with their gang.”

“I’m gonna go talk to the leader!” Ash said.

“You need to be careful.” She warned. “The Squirtle have all manner of traps and things.”

Ash shook his head. “This isn’t right.”

“Wait, Squirt, could you lead us to…” The mon immediately tensed and began to sweat. Could yes, should or would was another story. “Actually never mind, that wouldn’t be cool to ask ya, sorry!” The mon was surprised.

“I’ll go on my own if I have to, you guys wait here.”

“No way!” Toren said.

“If you are going we are going.” Brock said.

They had back onto Squirtle Squad turf and search. Ash fell into a few traps but it didn’t stop him. He focused his aura and began springing the traps before they could cause trouble.

Squirt was impressed.

Meanwhile…

The Squirtle Squad had retreated to their hide out and were licking their wounds. Their leader felt something was different about the human with the Pikachu. Stomachs growled and they decided to hold off on payback and get some food.

They find Team Rocket and snatch their lunch. Jessie and James were left tied up and Meowth strung up in a tree which was giving him some serious PTSD. He freaked out and asked the Squirtle to let him down, keep him tied up if they wish just get him out of the tree. Even James and Jessie were shocked at the panic in his voice.

Meowth was let down and he caught his breath. Jessie offered the Squirtle a job, working for Team Rocket. “Our boss would make it worth your while.”

The leader scoffed. “He says that humans can’t be trusted.” Meowth translated.

“You can trust us, we’ll even help you get payback on those humans who took your friend. We’ll even steal him back for you.” James said.

The Squirtle began to chat amongst themselves. Meowth sold them that he technically wasn’t a caught Pokemon he was seen as an equal to humans, and he’d put in a good word with the Boss and make sure they’d have their freedom and what’s more the power to keep said freedom.

They let Meowth go and sat down for a meal, discussing their plan of attack.

Ash had kept up the search but hadn’t found a single Squirtle. “Oh man where are they?” His stomach grumbled.

“Can’t search on an empty stomach.” Brock set up a picnic and got to work on making food.

Mist does some fishing and Toren calls out his shiny Staryu. “Come out Dazzle!” The mon hopped into the river.

Ash called out his Pokemon. Krabby and Poliwhirl enjoy the water. He had Charmander train with Ponyta. The two clash with Ember. “Squirt?” The water type looks and observes.

“Now Charmander use Smokescreen, Ponyta use Hypnosis!” The Fire Type unleashes a thick black cloud of smoke. He hides in the smoke avoiding the Hypnosis.

‘What are they doing?’ He wonders.

Ash closes his eyes and feels his Pokemon through the smoke. Once it cleared he had the fire types clash with Ember again. Ponyta’s aura fluxed and it mastered their Ember.

Ketchum saw this and began to have Ponyta show off a mastered move. “Agile Style Ember!” Ponyta unleashed a speedy fire ball, almost like a burning bullet.

Squirt’s eyes sparkled. He left Mist’s side and got in close to observe.

When Mist noticed he began to search, only to have another Squirtle pop up. “There you are Squirt you must have wanted to go for a swim.”

“Wait Mist…” Toren adjusted his glasses. “That’s not…”

He was cut off as the Squirtle attacked them, blasting them with a Water Gun. Once they got taken down two more Squirtle jumped out and attacked with ropes tying them up.

“Dazzle help us.” Dazzle jumped from the water, but before he could help he was hit from the back by a Poison Sting. Worst luck they had gotten Poisoned.

Brock and Ash’s Pokemon didn’t fair much better as the Squirtle Squad jumped him. Brock got tied up and Ash’s Pokemon got sneak attacked. Pikachu wanted to fight back, but with everyone wet from the surprise sprays he’d zap them all. Poliwhirl and Krabby were swimming and were close to where Ash was training.

They came up and sat with Squirt, and talked to him about the training Mist was hoping to learn from Ash. Explaining about the mastered moves. Getting stronger was big on this guy’s to do list.

“Poison Gas!” Another surprise attack as Ash, Ponyta, Charmander, Squirt, Poliwhirl and Krabby were hit by Koffing’s toxic cloud. They coughed before the poison hit them. The boss Squirtle showed up and attacked.

“Squirtle...stop...don’t do this…” Ash collapsed.

The leader had no idea Squirt was nearby but was shocked to find him poisoned.

They were taken back to the Squirtle’s home base, Ash’s and Toren’s mons were in a cage provided by Team Rocket. The mons in balls were put in a bag, unable to help. “Ash...Ash...wake up…”

The boy came to, his aura purging the poison from his body. Meowth was with the Squirtles. “Haha we got you this time twerp.”

“Meowth, I should have known, Team Rocket was behind this. Squirtle you need to be careful Team Rocket…”

“Shut it human.” Meowth smacked Ash with his tail. “The Pokemon are in charge here. Once my pets come back this will all be over.” Jessie and James had slipped away.

Chomp! “Yeow!”

Ash tried to warn the Squirtle, but they weren’t listening. They didn’t trust humans at all. “Look I know you can’t trust me, but please…” So many of the Pokemon were hurt and poisoned, Ash didn’t have enough aura to heal them all, and they didn’t have enough Potions or Antidotes. “Let me at least go and get medicine for the Pokemon?”

The leader shook his head. “He knows you are just trying to save yourself.”

“Be quiet!” Ash snapped his aura flaring. The Squirtle flinched, they could feel Ash’s emotions, he wasn’t lying.

“Ash, look at Squirt…” Mist nudged him.

He did the Squirtle was away from the others, unconcious and suffering from the effects of the poison. “I’ll prove it, I’ll help Squirt and then you can let me go to town and get the medicine.”

“You can’t expect…” Meowth began only to be shut down by the boss Squirtle. He let Ash do it and the boy used his Aura to help Squirt. Even Meowth was shocked at the Aura Healing. ‘What is this brat?!’

“He needs to rest but he’ll be fine now.”

Squirtle let Ash go, but kept the others as insurance. “It’ll be okay, I’ll be back.”

Meowth didn’t care, he knew Jessie and James would be back sooner, and they’d be long gone. What he didn’t know was that Squirt would wake up and tell his boss about Ash, seeing him train and work with his Pokemon to get stronger.

Ash’s journey wasn’t an easy one, the Squirtle base was off the beaten path so he had to go through some dangerous areas to get to town. He crossed an old bridge that couldn’t handle his weight and he fell. “No!” Ash cried out as he fell.

“Ab!” Abra appeared, grabbed him and used Teleport. Ash was saved and he was even closer to town. The Psychic type vanished as quickly as he came.

“Was that...I gotta hurry…” Abra watched him go.

Meanwhile in Town…

Jessie and James were plotting their own revenge. They convinced the town they’d get rid of the Squirtles and even got some money to do it.

Gary was also in this town, and he was getting annoyed since he had a Squirtle, the people in this town were giving him attitude. “This town is nuts.” He left, his car speeding down the road.

Ash had barely managed to avoid getting hit.

Ketchum made it into town and went and got the medicine, he bought plenty. Team Rocket was already heading back, planning to use Blaster Balls to get rid of the Squirtle. “Isn’t this a bit extreme?”

“Those tiny turtles dared humiliate me, because of them Meowth treated us like dirt we are done playing nice. We’ll have the twerps Pokemon that’ll make the boss very happy.”

Ash got a lift from Officer Jenny and made it back before them. Meowth panicked and slipped away. Ketchum got all the mons treated and they pounced on their master, showing their love. “I’m glad everyone is okay.”

The Boss Squirtle saw this.

Their nice moment was ruined as Team Rocket attacked. Blaster Balls rained from their balloon blasting anything and everything. Boom! Boom! Boom!

Meowth climbed up a latter. “Why didn’t you get Pikachu?” Jessie hissed.

“You guys took too long!” Meowth snapped back.

“Ugh whatever let’s just get rid of these pests!”

The Squad tried to fight back but Team Rocket was too high up for Water Guns to reach. “Bye bye!” They dropped more Blaster Balls.

“Quick back into the cave!”

Squirtle tripped and ended up on his back. “Bye bye, Squirtle!”

“No!” Ash jumped onto Squirtle and summoned his aura.

Boom!

The blast knocked Ash for a loop. He was messed up but he’d protected Squirtle from the blast. “Thank goodness, you’re okay.” He said. The rainbow feather began to glow brighter. “Squirtle get your squad and my friends out of here.”

More explosives came down, even Meowth was helping now.

Squirtle cried tears, manly tears! He picked up Ash and raced with him to the cave.

Team Rocket’s assault caused fire to spread, the local Pokemon were running as things got crazy. “Look what you’ve done Team Rocket!” Ash snapped.

Ponyta was pissed. “Pon!”

“Alright, Strong Style Ember!” Ponyta summoned a massive fire ball, everyone gasped. It was huge and Ponyta launched it at Team Rocket.

Boom!

They got blasted off.

Jenny saw the explosion and came around. The fire was spreading fast, the town would also be caught up in it.

“Don’t worry Jenny we got this.” Ash asked the Squirtle squad for help. “We can do it, if we do it together!”

“Squirtle!” The mons agreed. They did rally together but they also had help Ash’s Poliwhirl and Krabby using their Water Guns. Mist called out Squirt, Staryu, and his Starmie calling for Water Guns. Toren used Dazzle and helped with Water Gun.

A surprising one was Sandshrew, he used Strong Stile Sand Attack to help smother the flames.

After the fires were put out, Toren had his Grass Pokemon get to work and repair the forest.

The Squirtle Squad apologized and the humans had to apologize as well, working with Team Rocket was a mistake, and could have ended badly for all of them. Jenny took on the Squirtle Squad as fire fighters and police pokemon, they’d now get to live in town and protect it.

All but one, the boss Squirtle chooses Ash and joins him. Ash catches him, and decides to use his Pokedex to send Krabby back to Oak’s lab. Ash uses Jenny’s phone to call Professor Oak to prepare another switch, switching Butterfree for Bulbasaur.

“Oh you guys won’t believe this, I think Abra saved me!”

“Huh?!”
